One of the most frequently requested improvements we are asked to make at A&R Design is the installation of bi-fold doors, usually as part of a larger extension or renovation project.

A growing trend to merge kitchen/diner or living spaces with the outdoors has seen almost half of homeowners creating a more seamless flow between garden and indoor spaces when extending or renovating their properties.

Bi-folding doors are a great solution for families wishing to bring more light to their living space, whilst continuing to maximise space. The flexible design of bi-fold doors, with multiple panels arranged in a concertina design, means that the doors can be made to span almost the whole external wall of the property, whilst taking up hardly any space. The doors come in a variety of different materials and colours to fit with different decorative styles.

These dark aluminium doors (shown below) were installed as part of two kitchen diner renovations carried out by A&R Design. In the first property in Morley Road, the colour complements the new dark wood-effect Karndean (a hard wearing vinyl) floor. The dark colour of the doors is unobtrusive, enhancing the feel of a seamless flow between the garden and the living space.

In the second picture, graphite aluminium doors fit perfectly with the clean lines and on-trend grey decor, with contrasting red accessories, giving a sleek contemporary feel. Again, the dark and unobtrusive colour of the doors helps to open up the indoor space to the garden, giving a lovely spacious feel.

In this property in Essex Road, Enfield, bi-fold doors have been used to open the back of the kitchen –diner extension and give a lovely view of the garden. A light wood has been chosen to complement the classic but contemporary feel of the dining area, and tone with the furniture. The doors open up the view of the garden and work with the three skylights to provide plenty of natural light into this bright spacious room.

In some properties, bi-fold doors are a less practical option, but additional light can be provided by the installation of skylights. In this Victorian property, natural light floods through the new skylight into what was originally a dark corridor, working with the white paintwork to create a feeling of a light and airy space.
